Word soon got out and before he knew it there was more work than one man could handle. In November, 1969, Dutch Made Inc. was formed. It was a small, two man operation. However, business soon increased such that they soon outgrew the chicken coop. A larger facility was built and the number of employees eventually increased to six in the early 1970s. And even though there were other cabinet shops in the area, Dutch Made was being recognized by the public and by contractors for their matchless quality.
During the early years of the business, a kitchen sales company from Tecumseh, Michigan approached Martin about selling Dutch Made cabinets and an arrangement was made to supply cabinets on a small scale. Little did they realize this was the early beginnings of the present dealer program. As word spread in the Michigan area, Martin began to get calls from other cabinet dealers interested in partnering with Dutch Made.
The Dutch Made dealer program became official in 1973. First, in Michigan and Ohio. Then, Illinois and Wisconsin were added shortly thereafter. At the start, one truck was purchased for cabinet deliveries. Soon, more trucks were needed, as well as a garage and a full-time mechanic.
Throughout the 70s and 80s the business continued to grow. Sometimes painfully so. Buildings were enlarged and new departments and employees were added. Martin and his team faced the challenges of fulfilling increased order volume and maintaining variations in styles demanded by the industry—all requiring constant adjustment to the manufacturing process. And the Dutch Made family stepped up to every obstacle.
In 1990, Martin Graber and family become the sole owner of Dutch Made Inc. Continual growth in the early 90s lead to a second local manufacturing facility being purchased in the neighboring town of Harlan, IN, where key cabinet components are still built today.
1992 and 1993 brought national notoriety by being selected as a featured booth at the Kitchen and Bath Show both years. This also lead to being highlighted in both Country Living and Woman’s Day magazines. Dutch Made was officially on the map.
Dutch Made now employs 85 local craftsman and office staff. With two local manufacturing plants totaling approximately 150,000 sq ft of production space, Dutch Made proudly partners with award winning dealers and designers in more than 20 states, servicing dealerships from coast to coast.
